Dealing with Loneliness: The Realities of Solo Travel

Person looking at ocean

Solo travel can bring waves of crippling loneliness, especially during quiet moments away from the excitement. That stunning sunset means something different when there's no one to turn to and say "Can you believe this?"

I hit my lowest point three months into my journey, sitting alone in a café in Budapest while couples and friends laughed around me. I questioned everything: Why was I doing this? Was I running away from real life? Would I ever feel connected again?

What helped me through:

Strategies for Combating Solo Travel Loneliness:

- Stay in community-focused hostels rather than private accommodations
  • Join free walking tours in each new city

  • Use apps like Meetup to find events with like-minded travelers

  • Establish a routine to ground yourself - perhaps a morning journaling session

  • Schedule regular video calls with loved ones back home

  • Remember that feeling lonely sometimes is normal and human

The beautiful paradox of solo travel is that it taught me to enjoy my own company while also making me more open to connections with strangers. Some of my deepest conversations have been with people I met for just a few hours.
